How many types of premature ejaculation exist?

A primary premature ejaculation refers to one that has always existed, that is to say, that the individual has never been able to control the ejaculation. A secondary premature ejaculation occurs when it appears suddenly, at a specific point in an individual’s life.

How does one detect premature ejaculation?

In a normal sexual relationship the level of arousal of the male will increase progressively until he reaches the climax phase. Sexual pleasure will last until the climax is reached, voluntarily. Males who suffer PE are not able to make the climax phase last, on the contrary, they experience a fast arousal and an early involuntary ejaculation.

Is premature ejaculation the same as impotence?

No. Impotence is a total or partial lack of erection or the inability to maintain an erection during sufficient time to have satisfactory sexual intercourse. Occasionally, PE is a symptom of an incipient impotence.

What are the causes of premature ejaculation?

  • · Organic causes: Uro-genital afflictions of the posterior urethra and of the prostate, neurological alterations, degenerative disorders, vascular alterations, drugs (antidepressants, anti-hypertension, stimulants…) hormonal imbalances and all diseases which alter the reflexes of ejaculation.
  • · Psychological causes: They are more common. The immediate cause which is always present in premature ejaculation is a lack of perception of sexual sensations. Other causes include: anti-sexual messages experienced during childhood, lack of sexual information, pressure to perform induced by the partner, troublesome family atmosphere, anxiety, stress, fear of failure and difficulty for controlling stimuli.

How does premature ejaculation affect the couple?

If the male suffers PE, foreplay will undoubtedly be reduced and this in turn will prevent the female from reaching a high level of arousal. As a result she will experience more difficulty to reach an orgasm during intercourse.

What treatments are available for premature ejaculation?

The most innovative treatments are drugs and psychotherapy and surgery in only a small percentage of cases (selective neurotomy). However, the latest trend in treatment consists of andro-sexological psychotherapy. It consists of the administration of new drugs which produce a delay in the ejaculatory reflex together with a psycho therapy process for the couple which will teach them techniques and exercises.

What is the current success rate for PE treatment?

The therapy has a duration of 3-6 months and a success rate of 95%.

What complications may arise during a PE treatment?

Factors which can put an end to the therapy: the anticipation or fear of failure anxiety, couple’s lack of collaboration and/or commitment, lack of communication and/or sensitivity towards each other’s feelings, objections to the treatment methodology, attitude issues, etc. If one suffers this pathology the best option is go to a specialist as soon as possible in order to begin the treatment and solve the problem as soon as possible.

What is the partner’s role during a PE treatment?

The aid and collaboration of the partner is essential for a successful treatment. The couple must communicate with each other to avoid conflict. The partner should partake in the therapeutic process, this has become an essential factor as it directly contributes to treatment’s success.

If one has no partner, will the treatment differ?

The same therapeutic techniques are usually applied for premature ejaculators with no partner. The aim is the same one: reaching self-control as one gets to know his own sexual response better and frees himself from fears, anxiety, inferiority complexes and/or shyness, increasing his self esteem.
